What is a Qui Tam Relator

Qui Tam Relator

A Qui Tam Relator is the whistle blower in a law suit that is brought under a statute that lets a private citizen sue on behalf of the government. If the law suit is successful the Qui Tam Relator receives a reward. Typically the amount is between 15% and 30% of the government's recovery. A Qui Tam Relator is often an employee or some other type of "insider" at the target company or organization, but he or she does not have to be. It is enough to have helpful information. Sometimes competitors, vendors, customers, patients or just people who are able to put pieces of a complex fraud puzzle together are able to qualify as Qui Tam Relators. Since a Qui Tam Relator is suing on behalf of the government he or she must have an attorney and, in most instances, is not allowed to file the law suit pro se.
